boulderbar grades, explained
boulderbar opened its first hall in a courtyard on Hannovergasse in Vienna in 2012 and calls it Austria's first urban bouldering gym with single-colour boulders. It now has seven halls: four in Vienna (Hannovergasse, Wienerberg, Hauptbahnhof and Seestadt) and one each in Salzburg, Linz (in neighbouring Leonding) and St. Pölten. As the name says, every hall has a bar. The Vienna and St. Pölten halls are run by boulderbar GmbH and the Salzburg and Linz halls by boulderbar Salzburg GmbH, with a separate price list for each region.
Bouldering grades
Each boulder uses holds of a single colour. The start holds carry signs that show the grade on a Fontainebleau-based scale: 3, 4A, 4B, 4C, 5A … 8A+, 8B. Boulders marked '?' instead of a grade involve unusual movement that is hard to grade. The gym suggests beginners start on boulders marked 4.
The gym grades in Font directly. Here is the range gyms usually set, in V-scale:
| Font | V-scale |
|---|---|
| 4 | V0−–V0+ |
| 5 | V1–V3 |
| 6A | V3–V4 |
| 6B | V4 |
| 6C | V5–V6 |
| 7A | V6–V7 |
| 7B | V7–V8 |
| 7C | V9–V10 |
| 8A | V11–V12 |
boulderbar uses this grading at all its gyms. From the gym's own grading guide. Gyms reset and regrade often, and grades vary between setters, so treat this as a guide and check the boards when you visit.
