Beyond Bouldering grades, explained
Beyond Bouldering was started in 2017 by a group of South Australian climbers and runs three bouldering gyms in Adelaide: Keswick, Kent Town and Thebarton, the flagship opened in December 2024. Difficulty is shown by a coloured tag at the start on a nine-step scale; hold colour only marks which holds belong to a problem. Each gym is split into four sectors, with one reset every week.
Bouldering grades
Difficulty is shown by a coloured tag at the start; hold colour only marks which holds belong to the problem. The tags run on a numbered nine-step scale: 1 orange, 2 aqua, 3 lime, 4 lavender, 5 pink, 6 red, 7 white, 8 black, 9 yellow. A separate 'C' tag marks comp-style climbs. Beyond Bouldering doesn't publish a V-grade for each colour, so these ranges are our estimate. We spread the levels over the usual VB–V10 range in the published order, anchored to its comp categories: pink to white is V3–V6 and white to black is V6+.
| Level | V-scale | ≈ Font |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Orange | VB–V0 | 3–4B+ |
| 2 · Aqua | V0–V1 | 4B–5B |
| 3 · Lime | V1–V2 | 5A–5C |
| 4 · Lavender | V2–V3 | 5B–6A+ |
| 5 · Pink | V3–V4 | 5C+–6B+ |
| 6 · Red | V4–V5 | 6A+–6C+ |
| 7 · White | V5–V7 | 6C–7B |
| 8 · Black | V7–V9 | 7A+–7C |
| 9 · Yellow | ≥ V9 | ≥ 7C |
Beyond Bouldering uses this grading at all its gyms. Estimated by Gear Loop. The gym publishes only the order of its colours, so these ranges are our best guess from its chart and climbers' descriptions. Gyms reset and regrade often, and grades vary between setters, so treat this as a guide and check the boards when you visit.
