Scarpa Veloce review: fit, sizing and what climbers say

A soft, comfortable single-strap gym shoe with very sticky S-72 rubber and a roomy, rounded toe box. It suits beginner-to-intermediate climbers and anyone who wants a comfortable training shoe for long indoor sessions. Stronger climbers will find it lacks support on tiny edges, and it doesn't belong in cracks.

Take your street shoe size

For a snug all-round fit, a street UK 9 (EU 43) is a UK 9 (EU 43) in the Veloce. Go half a size smaller for hard bouldering, or bigger for long days. It's a starting point: feet differ, so try them on if you can.

How the Veloce fits

WideHigh volume
Heel
Soft, sensitive heel with M50 rubber, but narrow heels and ankles often can't get it tight and may slip on hard hooks.
Toe box
Broad, tall, rounded toe with extra room for the 4th and 5th toes; comfortable but blunt in small pockets.
Suits
Wide and high-volume feet. Slim or low-volume feet should avoid it: the strap can run out of adjustment.

What climbers say

From independent reviews and buyers' feedback; each point is backed by at least two sources.

Strengths

  • Very comfortable for long indoor sessions thanks to the roomy toe box and soft build
  • Sticky, sensitive rubber that smears superbly on volumes and gym walls
  • Soft flex and toe rubber make toe and heel hooks easy
  • Good value compared with top-tier performance shoes

Watch out for

  • Too soft to support tiny edges, and feet tire on long or sustained climbs
  • Soft rubber wears quickly, especially outdoors
  • Too roomy for low-volume feet; the strap can be too long
  • Blunt toe is poor in small pockets and cracks
Stretch and break-in: Scarpa describes the microfiber upper as stretch-resistant. Most owners go half to one and a half sizes under street size for a relaxed fit; some size down much more for edging with little pain, and a few wear their street size. Break-in is short.
