La Sportiva TC Pro review: fit, sizing and what climbers say

A stiff, flat, mid-height lace-up built for crack climbing, big walls and long trad routes, designed with Tommy Caldwell. Buy it if you spend your days jamming granite cracks and edging on vertical faces; skip it for steep sport or bouldering.

For a snug all-round fit, a street UK 9 (EU 43) is a UK 8 (EU 42) in the TC Pro. Go half a size smaller for hard bouldering, or bigger for long days. It's a starting point: feet differ, so try them on if you can.

How the TC Pro fits

NarrowMedium volume
Heel
Burly, fairly flat heel cup: secure for jamming and occasional hooks, but not sensitive for technical heel hooks; the 2021 update removed the heel hem to ease Achilles pressure.
Toe box
Flat, rounded toe that lies flat in jams; the 2021 toe is slightly lower-volume and more precise than before but still not ideal for tiny pockets.
Suits
Mid-narrow feet. High-volume or wide feet may feel the lace protectors and tongue pressing; try before buying.

Strengths

  • Best-in-class for crack climbing: flat sole, stiff flex and ankle padding protect feet in jams
  • Stiff P3 platform edges confidently on vertical faces
  • Comfortable enough for all-day multi-pitch and big-wall days once broken in
  • Durable and resoles well

Watch out for

  • Poor on steep terrain: hard to curl toes and pull
  • Limited sensitivity and only fair smearing, especially out of the box
  • Weak toe hooks and a flat heel for technical hooking
  • Expensive, with a stiff, sometimes painful break-in
Stretch and break-in: Stiff leather needs a few sessions to soften; OutdoorGearLab expects 0.5-1 EU size of stretch, while Climbing House says the 2021 version is stiffer and stretches less than the original. Sizing advice: about half a US size down for all-day comfort, 1-1.5 down for technical trad. Rock+Run notes it runs generous, so street size gives a comfort fit with a thin sock.
