Sputnik Climbing grades, explained
Sputnik Climbing runs seven climbing centres in Spain: five in the Madrid area (Alcobendas, Las Rozas, Legazpi, Chamberí and Guindalera), one in Berango near Bilbao and one in Lugones, Asturias, which opened in September 2026. Most centres combine bouldering with auto-belay or roped routes, and most have a canteen, La Cantina. Boulder difficulty is shown by coloured start tags, not by hold colour. Sputnik also publishes an online climbing magazine, El Cohete, and some passes cover all its centres.
Bouldering grades
Difficulty is shown by coloured tags on the start holds, not by the hold colour. Sputnik's magazine lists the tag order as white, green, yellow, blue, purple, red and black. The grade range for each colour comes from two third-party guides, iwannaclimb and Planomato, which agree. We read their grades as Font.
| Level | Font | ≈ V-scale |
|---|---|---|
| White (blanco) | 4–5 | V0−–V3 |
| Green (verde) | 5–6A | V1–V3 |
| Yellow (amarillo) | 6A–6B | V3–V4 |
| Blue (azul) | 6B–6C | V4–V5 |
| Purple (morado) | 6C–7A | V5–V6 |
| Red (rojo) | 7A–7B | V6–V8 |
| Black (negro) | 7B–8A | V7–V11 |
Rope climbing grades
Routes are graded on the French scale: V, V+, 6a, 6a+, 6b and up. Sputnik writes grade 5 as the Roman numeral V.
The gym grades in French directly. Here is the range gyms usually set, in YDS:
| French | YDS |
|---|---|
| 4 | 5.6–5.8 |
| 5 | 5.8–5.10a |
| 6a | 5.10a–5.10b |
| 6b | 5.10c–5.11a |
| 6c | 5.11a–c |
| 7a | 5.11c–5.12a |
| 7b | 5.12b–5.12c |
| 7c | 5.12d–5.13a |
| 8a | 5.13b–5.13c |
| 8b | 5.13d–5.14a |
Sputnik Climbing doesn't say so outright, but its gyms appear to share this grading. From climbers' descriptions and photos of the gym's grade boards. Gyms reset and regrade often, and grades vary between setters, so treat this as a guide and check the boards when you visit.
