BUMP Bouldering grades, explained
BUMP Bouldering (Uplift Climbing Sdn Bhd) opened its first gym at Jaya One, Petaling Jaya, on 4 May 2019 and added a second at Pavilion Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, in 2023. Problems are graded with dots, from 1 dot to 12 dots plus an 'Alien' grade, and both gyms are walk-in. In September 2025 BUMP sold pre-launch memberships for a third gym, 'BUMP 3', at Sunway Square, which its website does not yet list.
Bouldering grades
BUMP grades with dots instead of V-grades: 13 grades from 1 dot (easiest) to 12 dots, plus an 'Alien' grade for the hardest problems. The gym publishes no V conversion, so the ranges below are an estimate made by spreading the 13 grades over a typical VB to V10+ range. The gym's own class pages use dots as levels (e.g. 'Climbing 2-3 Dots', '5 dots or higher').
| Level | V-scale | ≈ Font |
|---|---|---|
| 1 dot | VB | 3 |
| 2 dots | V0 | 4B–4B+ |
| 3 dots | V1 | 5A–5B |
| 4 dots | V2 | 5B–5C |
| 5 dots | V3 | 5C+–6A+ |
| 6 dots | V4 | 6A+–6B+ |
| 7 dots | V5 | 6C–6C+ |
| 8 dots | V6 | 6C+–7A |
| 9 dots | V7 | 7A+–7B |
| 10 dots | V8 | 7B–7B+ |
| 11 dots | V9 | 7C |
| 12 dots | V10 | 7C+ |
| Alien13th and hardest grade, open-ended | ≥ V10 | ≥ 7C+ |
BUMP Bouldering doesn't say so outright, but its gyms appear to share this grading. Estimated by Gear Loop. The gym publishes only the order of its colours, so these ranges are our best guess from its chart and climbers' descriptions. Gyms reset and regrade often, and grades vary between setters, so treat this as a guide and check the boards when you visit.
