Five Ten Hiangle review: fit, sizing and what climbers say

The Hiangle is a downturned, single-strap slipper with Five Ten's sticky Stealth C4 rubber and generous heel rubber, pitched as a comfortable performance shoe for steep sport climbing, bouldering and the gym. It's a good step up from flat shoes for narrow to medium feet, at a lower price than most aggressive shoes. Its rounded toe is less precise in small pockets.

Size up about one size from your street shoe

For a snug all-round fit, a street UK 9 (EU 43) is a UK 10 (EU 44½) in the Hiangle. Go half a size smaller for hard bouldering, or bigger for long days. It's a starting point: feet differ, so try them on if you can.

How the Hiangle fits

NarrowMedium volume
Heel
Full rubber heel coverage that reviewers rate for heel hooks. Narrow heels usually fit well, though one tester found it baggy in places.
Toe box
Rounded, slightly blunt toe with rubber wrapping over the top for toe hooks and scumming. It is less precise in small pockets and thin cracks.
Suits
Narrow to medium feet and narrow heels. Wide feet struggle with the narrow elastic opening and snug toe box.

What climbers say

Strengths

  • Sticky Stealth C4 rubber that grips well on smears and when toeing in on steep ground
  • Comfortable for an aggressive shoe, so you don't have to rip it off after every attempt
  • Plenty of rubber on the toe and heel for hooking and scumming
  • Cheaper than most comparable aggressive shoes

Watch out for

  • The rounded toe is less precise in small pockets and thin cracks
  • Narrow fit and tight opening make it hard for wide feet; adidas says it runs small
  • Likely to wear out sooner than pricier La Sportiva or Scarpa shoes
Stretch and break-in: adidas says the shoe runs small and, based on returns, recommends half a size up from your usual adidas size. OutdoorGearLab's wide-footed tester went half a size above street size and a full size above her La Sportiva and Scarpa sizes, and still found it tight. The current microfiber upper stretches less than the old leather Hiangle; Rock+Run saw half to a full size of stretch on that leather version. Expect a few tight sessions before it softens.
