About board problems
Training boards like the MoonBoard, the Kilter Board, the Tension Board and the Grasshopper Board are standard walls with the same holds in the same places in gyms around the world, so a problem set in one gym can be climbed on the same board anywhere. Each problem lights up its holds: start, hand, finish and, on the Kilter, Tension and Grasshopper boards, foot holds. Gear Loop lists 277,252 problems at every angle climbers have logged them, from the most climbed down.
- How do I find board problems that use a particular hold?
- Tap “Find by holds” and tap the holds on the board. The list shows every problem that uses all of them, as any kind of hold (start, hand, finish or foot). Combine it with a grade range or a name to narrow it down.
- What's a benchmark problem?
- A benchmark is a problem whose grade the community or the board's makers consider settled. Benchmarks are a good place to start if you want a grade you can trust.
- How are board grades shown?
- MoonBoard problems are shown in Font grades first (6B+, 7A…) and Kilter, Tension and Grasshopper problems in V grades first, the way each board's climbers talk about them, with the other scale alongside.
- Which boards are covered?
- MoonBoard Masters 2017, MoonBoard Masters 2019 and MoonBoard 2024; the Kilter Board Original (12 x 12 with kickboard); Tension Board 1 (the full 8 ft wide wall); Tension Board 2 in both layouts, Mirror and Spray (12 x 12); and the Grasshopper Board (GrandMaster 12 x 12 with Tweeners).
- Can I see problems at other angles?
- Yes. Pick an angle above the board: each angle has its own problems, grades, ascents and stars, because a problem gets harder (and is graded again) as the board gets steeper. The MoonBoard has problems at 25° and 40°; the Kilter, Tension and Grasshopper boards at most angles from 0° to 70°. Each board opens at its most climbed angle: 40°, or 30° on the Grasshopper.
Problems are set and repeated by the MoonBoard, Kilter, Tension and Grasshopper communities (from BoardSesh's public snapshots, 3 October 2026).
